Color History

Colour has been investigated and used for more than 2000 years. There is an element of detachment that we have from historic black and white images. It's as if they are only shadows from a time too long ago for any of us to remember. With our modern eyes, we are somehow disconnected from the real and vibrant world those photos are actually portraying. By adding color to these images of history, the viewer is brought a little closer to the reality in which they were taken. Color helps to give a little bit of a glimpse into the world as it was from long ago, an opportunity to see perhaps something like what the photographer himself saw through his lens.
Color can force us to instantly see an old photograph with a new perspective, and make it seem as if the past it portrays wasn't that long ago after all.

The Middle Ages

Aristotle mixed colour
He discovered that by mixing two colours, a third is produced. He did this with a yellow and blue piece of glass, which when brought together produced green. He also discovered that light travels in waves.
Plato and Pythagoras also studied light.

Issac Newton

Issac Newton a pioneer of colour
He learnt that when the light rays were passed again through a prism the rays turned back into white light. If only one ray was passed through the prism it would come out the same colour as it went in. Newton concluded that white light was made up of seven different coloured rays.

Color Theory

Color enriches our lives as a natural, visual experience.
Understanding color can help you use it more effectively.
3 essential elements must be present: light, an illuminated object, and an observer.

Before light reaches our eyes, it is modified by colorants in the objects we see.
Colorants used in reproducing images are pigments and dyes.

When light strikes an object, wavelengths may be reflected, absorbed or transmitted.
Colorants can be mixed to control the wavelengths and colors we see.

During a traditional Chinese wedding, it is considered auspicious for the bride and bridegroom to dress in red.
